17th November 2016
Christmas is well and truly in the air. The nights are darker, coats are thicker, The Pogues are on the radio, and soon enough the streets will be awash with bratwurst and beer steins. By Christmas morning, all the stress of present buying will be behind you, and all thoughts will turn to dinner. With so much going on, the idea of a luxurious lunch without the kitchen stress grows more appealing every year – reports last year suggested a 251% increase in Christmas Day restaurant bookings compared to 2011.
With a scenic backdrop, sophisticated interiors and expertly curated menus, the Mailbox is the perfect place to eat, drink and be merry on the 25th. Here are our top picks of where to dine on the big day.
The idea of a white Christmas is getting increasingly more far-fetched every year, to the point where you struggle to even dream of one. A far more realistic, yet just as festive thought is a Rouge Christmas. Overlooking canalside, you’ll find city centre serenity in a Christmas card setting.
The menu caters for all appetites and represents the largest selection on offer at the Mailbox. The French twist to classic Christmas dinner adds to the attraction, with starter options that include salmon rillettes and crevettes. The main course features five dishes, aside from the classic turkey, including confit de canard and salmon en papillote; and Christmas dinner is finished off with a crème brûlée or winter fruit crumble amongst other French takes on dessert.
The six-course banquet is priced at just £45 and bookings can be made here or by telephone on 0121 665 6437.
Chez Mal @ Malmaison
The home of Sunday lunch at the Mailbox, Chez Mal delivers the finest roasts on a weekly basis. So when the chefs turn their hands to a festive lunch, you’re guaranteed all the care and attention of a home-cooked Christmas dinner, without the hassle.
The menu covers the classic turkey, trimmings and Christmas pud route, but for those who have eaten the poultry non-stop during advent, the options at Chez Mal offer something quite unlike anywhere else. Starters include Jerusalem artichoke, chestnut and truffle soup, and a heritage beetroot salad with pickled raspberry. Alternative accompaniments to the main course veg are a honey and soy glazed tuna steak, or sweet potato gnocchi served with an exotic Thai puree. To finish, there’s a choice of five desserts including a Madagascan vanilla panna cotta.
The festive lunch includes three courses, a glass of champagne and Christmas crackers, and is priced at £95 per head. To book a table click here, or phone Chez Mal on 0121 246 5030.
Miller & Carter
Whilst everywhere switches its menu to not only accommodate a turkey, but provide quirky and imaginative alternatives, the Mailbox’s premier steakhouse still has its signature beef at the top of the menu.
The five-course Christmas feast is the most classic on offer at the Mailbox: shallot tart, hand carved turkey roast, cheese board – but it’s the Miller & Carter Steak Experience that could really tempt people away from the sacred Christmas bird. Choose either a fillet or rib-eye steak, cooked perfectly to any taste, topped with pancetta-wrapped black pearl scallops. For those passionate about steak, even at Christmas, this is the perfect festive lunch.
Christmas at Miller & Carter costs £69.95 and can be booked here or over the phone on 0121 643 7738.
