Lower mall sets the benchmark for design

There’s a brand new seating area in the Mailbox’s lower retail mall, as a series of sculptural benches have been unveiled.

Inspired by Birmingham’s metal design industries, from automotive and aeronautical, to Olympic medals and Wimbledon trophies, the steel furniture provide a benchmark for design and functionality. In a nod to the city’s legacy of jewellery, the simplistic structures are finished with metallic patterns, in copper, gold, bronze and silver.

Found in the lower retail mall, surrounded by Castle Fine Art, Cloudo Kids, East Club and the fantastic photography exhibition by students from Solihull School, the installation of the folded metal benches follows the unveiling of the stunning Urban Room in October.

The benches were designed by Mel Chantrey, a leading arts professor, Turner Prize nominee and Creative Adventurer at Milligan, and manufactured by London-based Benson Sedgwick.
