Long lunch vs the Quickie

The Mailbox is a great place for an evening or night out. If you’ve visited then you’ll know our bars and restaurants are always buzzing. But if you’re working, shopping or popping through the Mailbox during the day, make the most of all of the options available for lunch. I like nothing better than a catch up with friends over a leisurely lunch so here are my top three restaurants for that… however more often than not I’m grabbing a quick bite between meetings so I’ve also made a list of my top three lunches for the time poor.

Top three long lunches

1. Bar Estilo

Jug of sangria…. Watch the word go by… then the tapas order sounds a little like this: ‘Chorizo and halloumi skewers; Duck wraps; Sardine fillet tostada’… with a Estilo special paella to share, this is the one with chorizo, chicken, prawns, mussels AND squid. Polish it off with a couple of cocktails – they do a mean Singapore Sling at the bar!

2. Bar Epernay

The Champagne Library makes for fascinating reading! Then, browse the lunch time menu: just £13.50 for 2 courses.

3. Pennyblacks

Earlier on this year, Pennyblacks refurbished and relaunched with a new look and new menu. Two mains during the week will cost just £15 or you can switch things up altogether and order a host of “Tappetisers” – great if you’re with friends and enjoying a lunchtime tipple or two. My suggestions?… Coconut prawns, beer battered black pudding and nachos with chipotle pulled pork. Now technically this is not for lunchtime BUT could this be any cuter?… Choose a bucket of popcorn with any of these flavours – salted caramel, toffee apple + cinnamon or peanut butter! Such fun!

Top three quick bites

1. Gourmet Burger Kitchen

The GBK burger is ‘handcrafted’. What does that mean? It means that each burger is made to order from 100% West Country beef – so you can make it your own if you have fussy tastes or if you want the lot! Even the dipping sauces are made from scratch in the kitchen. For the quickest burger in the West (of Birmingham) order from the lunch menu which is just £5.95 for a burger and a side or call ahead to have your order ready and waiting: 0121 633 8565. Fancy a naked Persian Lamb with a side of slaw? That does sound dramatic!

2. Nandos

Now this is quick chicken… Nando’s offers pre-order for collection or delivery through a nifty little app, or online. Chicken breast fillet pitta and a side for just £7.30? Don’t mind if we do! Favourite sides?…You have got to love those Macho Peas. Delish.

3. Pizza Express

This is a great value lunch. Choose from soups at just £3.45 with the signature Pizza Express dough ball and smaller salads and pizzas for just £4.95. There’s also a PLT (pancetta of course) Piadina… that’s a posh looking sandwich to you and I, but the bread is baked with Gran Moravia cheese. For something lighter, the Leggera Superfood salad is under 300 calories.
