We’re celebrating one year of Indico at the Mailbox. The popular restaurant has been an instant hit with our guests, with its irresistible menu packed with deliciously authentic North Indian cuisine. To mark the occasion, we chatted to the owner of Indico Street Kitchen, Faheem Badur about his experiences over the past year, as well as his favourite dishes and new festive treats that will be on the menu soon.
- Can you tell us a bit more about the history and culture behind Indico?
Indico was created to capture the vibrance of North India’s streets and the street food way of life. It’s an ode to centuries of Punjabi culture and cuisine, embracing India’s hospitality, generosity and traditional flavours.
Soon after we opened our Shirley branch, we won several awards and the restaurant became really popular with the local community. Opening at the Mailbox was a big step for us and we’ve been loving the experience. Both restaurants each have their own individual decor and vibe, so you’ll get a different experience when you visit each one.
- What’s been your best memory of being at the Mailbox so far?
Opening at the Mailbox has helped us become more of a household name in Birmingham and we’ve gained a lot of loyal customers who enjoy visiting us on a regular basis. We’ve loved reading all the kind reviews and it fills us with joy knowing our customers had an authentic experience with us.
During the height of lockdown, we remained open and provided takeaway only, meaning our customers could still enjoy Indico at home. When we were allowed to open again, it was a great feeling knowing we were providing customers with good food and gave them something to look forward to. We’ve received many messages from our visitors, thanking us for making their lockdown experience a little brighter.
- Is there a particular dish you love recommending to new visitors?
The Chef’s Special Thali is a great sharing dish which allows diners to try a variation of curries, you also get naan bread and a pot of rice included. The Gol Goppa Bombs are also a great dish to try, they ooze with flavour and are so bright and colourful! We recommend opting for a selection of different dishes to enjoy a range of food, plus we always encourage to eat with your hands, just like the Punjabis do… Don’t be afraid to get messy!
- What’s your favourite item on the menu?
We have so many amazing dishes! We would encourage new customers to get creative and don’t be afraid to sample dishes they may have never heard of; it may become your favourite meal! Our burgers are very popular, we have the Dirty Malai and Double Dhamaka, and they’re a great alternative for those who don’t really eat curry. We also have the Crunchy Pandey veggie burger, filled with crushed samosas! We wanted to make sure our menu caters for everyone.
- What special dishes have you got coming up for the festive season?
Our Masala Chai is the perfect after dinner treat. If you’ve ever experienced India’s street food, you’ll smell the aromas of the rustic chai which has been around for decades. Our chai goes wonderfully with our dessert, Gajar Ka Halwa, which is grated carrots cooked and sweetened, an Indian classic!
We also offer a range of regularly updated seasonal and classic cocktails. For the festive season, you can expect Gingerbread Martinis and our Sharabi, which includes Fireball whiskey – ideal to warm you up in the colder months.
Indico Street Kitchen is currently open for takeaway and delivery via Deliveroo.
