Advanced Director at Nicky Clarke at The Mailbox
How did you get to be working at Nicky Clarke?
I remember when I was 15 years old, walking down Mount Street Mayfair and seeing for the first time the Nicky Clarke Salon. I envisioned what it would be like to work for such a hairdressing legend.
When I heard Nicky Clarke was bringing a salon to Birmingham I thought it would be my opportunity to work for a brand that would represent me and the work I am so passionate about. I had friends who had worked for the Nicky Clarke brand in the past and they were kind enough to put me in touch with Simon Smith the group director. After an initial interview and an industry trade test I was fortunate enough to be offered a job.
So here I am seven years later still going strong and still as passionate about hairdressing as I was when I started. Working for the Nicky Clarke brand has given me so many opportunities and opened many doors within the industry. With our stunning new salon in the heart of The Mailbox the future is looking bright.
What’s the best thing about working in The Mailbox?
The Mailbox has an amazing location, diverse clientele and some fabulous eateries such as Malmaison, Cote, Strada and many more. Shopping will be very exciting when The Mailbox relaunches in 2015 after the refurbishment. Being canal side it’s well placed to access areas of the city such as Brindley Place and the Jewellery Quarter. It’s always clean and safe, with the car park being one of the best in the City, secure, well lit and with on-site valeting.
What’s the best advice you give to your clients?
I am so passionate about making people feel amazing about themselves! You are not just a hairdresser you are a listener, a friend and often a confidant. My best after care hair advice would be: Invest in the best hair care you can afford; it is as important as your skin, eat well and live a happy healthy life but most important of all don’t forget to book your next appointment!
How would you describe your style?
Non-conformist, edgy, current, sophisticated and chic. Because I spend a lot of time in London I get inspired and I visit Paris every year – the fashion capital and one of the cities I adore the most.
In this industry you have to be innovative, current and passionate about your style, I think it inspires my clients. My favourite quotes are:
“Fashion is what you buy”
“Style is what you do with it”
“Every day is a fashion show and the world is your runway”
What’s your favourite meal?
I dine out a lot but don’t really have a favourite meal. Living in the city you are spoilt for choice when it comes to restaurants – It usually depends on my mood, I like food to be elegant, creative, well presented and of course delicious.
Who are your icons?
There are some amazing icons out there but I love George Lamb for his sharp suits – Mariano De Vaio European chic and of course David Beckham – his name says it all. Olivia Palermo I love her innovative way and style, the jewellery, shoes, bags and Jackets, I also love Chleo Sevigny & Victoria Beckham, as a wife, mother and business woman, not to mention a fabulous fashion designer she is amazing!
Sofa or Gym?
Neither I am too spontaneous and my schedule is way too busy to fit in regular workouts. I spend very little time on the sofa, but it’s lovely when I do!
What’s on your iPod?
My iPod is fast – Everything from Beethoven to Jay Z – I appreciate all types of music, it’s whatever catches me.
What’s your favourite way to spend a Sunday afternoon?
A wide range of events, I really enjoy Sunday lunch with friends. I love seeing my friends and family over the weekend. As we close the salon on Mondays my Sundays are my Saturdays.
