After escaping the clutches of winter, your hair is probably in need of some TLC ahead of the summer. Months of going from the freezing cold, to heated areas, and back again can spell bad news for your hair. Add in your normal routine of hairdryers, straighteners and curling tongs and the chances are you’re left with dry and damaged hair – luckily help is on hand!

We caught up with the fabulous Sally Harrison, creative director at Toni & Guy Essensuals in the Mailbox, to talk tips, trends and how to rescue and repair your hair…

Welcome Sally! First things first, tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’ve been at Toni & Guy since the company first arrived in Birmingham back in 1997, qualifying as an artistic director in 2000. It was that same year that my colleague, Victoria, approached me to embark on a new venture, Toni & Guy Essensuals, and the rest is history!

We all know that winter can wreak havoc on your hair, what are your top tips for restoring healthy hair?

Winter is as harsh on hair as it is skin, something which many people don’t consider! Hair oils are a great way to lock in moisture and create soft, silky hair, whilst also offering protection from harsh winds and constant change in temperature. Oils can be applied to both wet and dry hair too, making them an essential all round product that’s really easy to use – Label M Therapy Age Defying Oil is one of our favourites in the salon, as well as the Kerastase Elixir Ultime.

It’s also really important to remember to use heat protection products before blowdrying, curling or straightening, another simple but effective way to keep hair healthy. Our number one styling spray in salon is the Label M Blowout Spray, which is definitely an essential product all year round!

What treatments do you recommend?

Our clients recently rated the professional hair wash as the most enjoyable part of a salon visit, so to add to the relaxation, Label M created ‘Lab Remedy’ exclusively for salons. There’s a choice of three treatments to target some of the most common hair woes, including one for dry and damaged hair, another for coloured hair and finally one for dry and itchy scalps. Combined with a seat in our reclining massage chairs, this is definitely a top to toe treatment that leaves you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated!

For someone looking for a new look for spring, what are the top hair trends to look out for?

The fringe is definitely making a comeback, and has been one of the most requested styles recently. Expect shorter and bolder cuts too, as people ditch long hair ahead of the warmer weather.

Colour wise, we’re seeing dramatic dip-dyes give way to softer more natural looks. Sun kissed pallets and grown out highlights are still popular, as is the balayage technique which is a softer version of the popular ombre.

For those wanting to be a bit more daring with their colour this season, pastel colours like peach, apricot and rose are amongst the popular choices from our extensive colour menu. Although more subtle than the bright pinks and purples we’ve seen this year, they’re still a great way to add a touch of colour.

Which celebrity’s hair would you most like to style?

I would love to style Paloma Faith’s hair! I love her modern twist on vintage glamour and she always looks impeccable. I can imagine we’d have great fun too, she’s a great character with such an infectious personality.

And finally, if you could give clients just one piece of hair care advice, what would it be and why?

To use professional shampoo and conditioner. It may seem expensive in comparison to high-street brands, but you’ll soon realise that it’s well worth the investment! Once people make the switch they’re amazed by the difference – you really can see the benefits instantly.
