5 Minutes with… Nikki Groves at Nicky Clarke

Colour Director at Nicky Clarke at The Mailbox

How did you get to be working at Nicky Clarke?

As a child I always wanted to be a hairdresser and then one Christmas my parents brought me my own Nicky Clarke hairdryer and that was it! I was so excited when I found out that Nicky Clarke was coming to Birmingham.  A friend of mine put me in touch with the manager as the salon was being built and ten years later I’m still loving it!

What’s the best thing about working in The Mailbox?

The Mailbox is great for everything but I love the nightlife and restaurants, it will be even better when the redevelopment is complete.

What’s the best advice you give to your clients?

Hair care!! You must look after the condition of your hair when you have great condition hair it gives you more flexibility with colour change. When your hair is in good condition it also holds your colour longer and keeps it more vibrant. Always choose colours that will suit your skin tone it will bring out the best in your skin and make your eyes stand out.

How would you describe your style?

I would probably describe my style as casual, contemporary and relaxed with a splash of glamour.

What’s your favourite meal?

I don’t really have a favourite meal. I love trying new things from all over the world, if I was to choose it would probably be Lebanese.

Who are your icons?

I like Alexa Chung’s relaxed style and l always like the colours in her hair. As well as Alexa I always think Dita Von Teese is super sexy and very glamorous and I love the deep dark colour of her sleek styled hair. I think people like J K Rowling who started with nothing was able to achieve all  she has done today.

Sofa or Gym?

I used to love going to the gym before work until the birth of my twin girls, who are three years old, my exercise is chasing after them in the park, keeping me fit!

What’s on your iPod?

From the Rolling Stones to Aretha Franklin to Paolo Nutini and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.  I love a good dance album and a bit of cheese with George Michael. I just love music that makes you feel good; we always have music on in our house.

What’s your favourite way to spend a Sunday afternoon?

It has to be going for Sunday lunch (so I don’t have to cook myself) with my family and close friends with plenty of Vino and maybe even a naughty pudding. If the weather is good a nice after dinner walk round the local park and a good family movie to finish the week off.
