With summer just around the corner, there’s no better time to change up your look. Whether it’s some subtle highlights for that sunkissed look, a dramatic cut and restyle, or a daring new colour trend, we’ve got help on hand to guide you through this year’s hottest new looks.

We caught up with the fantastic Colette, Colour Technician at Nicky Clarke in the Mailbox, to talk us through her top hair trends for this summer…

Hello Colette! First things first, tell us a little bit about yourself?

Hi! I’ve worked at Nicky Clarke for 8 years, having started as an assistant aged 17. I chose to specialise as a Colour Technician, and have recently completed my Master Colour Award – it’s been a year of stress but it’s definitely worth it to have that status now!

What are some of the most popular colour trends you’ve seen in salon in the past couple of months?

2015 has been quite varied so far, with everything from pastel colour tones in spring to the ongoing popularity of ombré and balayage. The thing with colour is that its constantly evolving, and although models and celebrities help to set the trends, classical colours are still the most popular.

Is there anything new this year that we should know about? A new colour trend, a new treatment or a new technique you’re using at Nicky Clarke?

We’ve just had a really exciting new product come in called Colourphlex, which is added to hair colour to help make hair up to 4x stronger. It’s perfect for people who colour their hair frequently as it significantly reduces breakage and helps return hair to its natural, healthy state.

We’ve also had the release of freelights this year, a product for more creative and free hand work, without the use of foils. It’s been a popular product for clients wanting a fantastic all over on-trend colour and something I’m sure we’ll be using more.

Ombre and dip-dye have both been really popular trends in the last year, do you have any tips for restoring dry ends after colouring?

Hair condition is so important; there is nothing worse than seeing people with dried out, faded and brittle hair! I always recommended a good treatment at home once a week for around 10/15 minutes to strengthen and restore moisture and shine. There are so many available, so it’s worth asking your stylist for a recommendation to suit your hair.

As well as treatments, I also swear by Nicky Clarke’s Argan oil, which is applied to wet hair before styling as a leave-in conditioner. It nourishes and adds protein to create healthy hair whilst containing UV and antioxidants to protect hair against heat styling.

So you’ve given someone a fantastic new colour; what are your top tips for making it last?

Regular salon appointments are the best way to keep your colour looking its best at all times, so if you book your return visit as you leave the salon, you can make sure you’re always on top of regrowth!

I would also recommend Nicky Clarke’s Stop Fade shampoo and conditioner. If you invest in your hair colour it is worth investing a few extra pounds in a salon recommended product too. Good products will help prolong your colour giving it long lasting radiance and shine.

And finally, if you could give any celebrity a hair colour makeover, who would it be and what would you choose?

Definitely Taylor Swift! For someone so beautiful, her hair colour is very one dimensional and safe, so it would be great to try something new. It wouldn’t have to be drastic, but taking it to a lighter blonde and adding a mix of tones would give it more definition and movement – I think it would make a huge difference!
