5 Minutes with… Alfie Maher

Alfie Maher – Advanced Director at Nicky Clarke at The Mailbox

How did you get to be working at Nicky Clarke?

I was fortunate enough to be offered a job at Nicky Clarke Birmingham just over two years ago.

My family and I had chosen to relocate to the midlands from the south-east and one of my main focuses was to work for a company with prestige and a strong heritage in the hairdressing industry. Nicky Clarke is someone who I have always respected and I made it my mission to work for him.

What’s the best thing about working in The Mailbox?

Working within The Mailbox brings in an incredibly diverse clientele. I’m particularly looking forward to the new look Mailbox in 2015, with the new John Lewis opening next year I feel the new centre of Birmingham will be right here!

What’s the best advice you give to your clients?

I always give my clients the right style for them, my service is completely bespoke, I look at their profession their lifestyle and the way they manage their hair currently.

My advice is to only use the styles you’ve seen in magazines, TV etc as a guide, there is a reason their hairdresser chose that particular style for them, it’s because it suits them!

Work with your hairdresser let them know everything you love about your hair and everything you hate, this gives them the guidelines to give you the perfect style which not only suits you but feels like you.

How would you describe your style?

I’m definitely relaxed in my style, I try not to look like a hairdresser, I go for the bloke next door look. I want to be smart enough to look professional but not too crisp that I appear intimidating, the last thing I want is for clients to feel they need to turn up in high heels for an appointment with me.

What’s your favourite meal?

I would love to say some French cuisine but I’m still a boy at heart and it has to be mum’s roast beef.

Who are your icons?

James Hunt, David Bowie, Keith Richards and the legendary Vidal Sassoon.

Sofa or Gym?

Neither, I get bored at home and bored at the gym. I rather be outside exercising.

What’s on your iPod?

Everything, I don’t follow one genre I just love music.

What’s your favourite way to spend a Sunday afternoon?

Sounds like a complete cliché but I can’t think of any other way to spend my Sunday afternoon than with my two beautiful children Amelie and Ralph.
